Social bookmarking is superior in many ways to the search engine spiders working on automatic resource location and classification software, such as the faster speed of indexing and tagging done by a person as compared to the browser’s spider. Consolidation and organization of a number of bookmarks is better through social bookmarking as also sharing between contacts. Understanding source content is definitely better as the tag based classification is done by people rather than software. Another important point is that ranking of the resource is done based on number of bookmarks and not the number of links, resulting in proper weight-age being given for relevance and popularity. On the other hand there are the drawbacks like absence of standardized keywords or structure of tags, spelling errors leading to mismatches in tags or unorthodox and vague terms used for the tags.
